Philosophy of Health

You may be asking yourself “what’s a philosophy page doing on a massage therapy website?” The answer is simple. In order for me to help you to attain “A Body For Living”, you will need to understand the philosophy of health I use in my massage therapy practice in Melbourne, FL.

This section will be continuously growing, so I recommend you return to this section each month for updates.

For now, here’s a section of an exam I took a few years back at Barry University from one of my health conditions classes. These are my answers based on multiple readings I’ve contemplated over the past few years. While my answers are opinions, perhaps they will shed light into the philosophy of health I promote in my practice.

Define health:
Health is the optimal state of being. This includes three main areas. First, there is a biological component which is subdivided into anatomical health and physiological health. Next, there is a mental component. Finally, there is a spiritual component which is distinct from the mental component. When all three components are functioning optimally (or at potential), health is achieved. Absence of illness or disease should not be considered “health” because it is possible to not be ill or diseased and still not have achieved health. Thus, there is really no term “good health” or “bad health”, just “health”. Bad health is commonly used to describe a diseased state. However, this is probably an improper usage. A point at which a person is not at “health” but has not declined to “disease or illness” is probably best described as “dys-health”.

Define illness:

Illness is best described as “dis-ease”, which is a point well-below health that has now let “dys-health” deteriorate and negatively influence objective or subjective function in some way for the patient (the person usually feels at “dis-ease”). This is the point most people seek health care, which, in reality, should be named medical care because it rarely takes their illness back to health, but instead back to a point just before they had the disease (usually dys-health).

While many of you will come to my practice with the intention of getting rid of disease or illness, I hope that now you will consider letting me help you get to HEALTH.
