If you think Neuromuscular Therapy is just about straightening out your posture, you might be interested to know that NMT can help with nonmigraine headaches. There are a number of muscles in your neck and shoulders which can become so neurologically active that they can refer pain into the head, ultimately causing the common headache. Massage for headaches through Neuromuscular Therapy can deactivate trigger points which have developed in these muscles, thereby eliminating the pain impulses perceived as a tension headache.
While the occasional headache of a muscular nature originates from stress or tension, frequent headaches are usually due to faulty posture(
i.e. sitting at the computer with a poorly designed chair
). Forward head posture can overwork certain neck muscles which end up referring pain into the head.
Teeth clenching or grinding is usually an unconscious attempt to relieve built-up stress. The muscles operating your jaw (in this case actually located on your head) can give pain in the teeth, ears, and sides of the head, (i.e. where you rub your temples). Long term clenching can lead to TMJ problems. Neuromuscular Therapy can reduce the tension on these facial muscles, thereby, eliminating one source of pain.

While some headaches are truly sinus related, other headaches, perceived as sinus headaches (typically those just above your eyebrows), actually have a fascial component. The cranial fascia can become bogged down and adhere to the musculature underneath, preventing proper capillary circulation. Special myofascial release techniques can be used to separate these adhesions and increase circulation.
In some instances, very frequent headaches may be a sign of a rare, but serious condition inside the skull itself. While brain tumors are rare, the expert advice of your doctor is probably a good idea just to make sure this possibility is ruled out. This advice is particularly appropriate is you are suffering from a constant headache.
As explained, many headaches can have a muscular component, which usually start with a headache trigger. Therefore, it is important to try to identify the things that trigger your headaches so you can avoid them. Strong, sweet smells, smoke, hunger, red wine, loud sounds, and visual over-stimulation are just a few of the better known headache triggers to avoid.
Remember that a true migraine headache is inside your skull, and massage probably can not help. True migraines are complex physiological conditions that need to be treated by a doctor. But if you know your headaches are not true migraines, give Neuromuscular Therapy a try, and get your head PAIN FREE!
