The practice of any form of massage therapy has not been shown by the scientific method to cure any disease or medical condition. Some evidence does exist which shows various forms of massage therapy can reduce pain and improve function.
Any claims made on this site about massage therapy helping with any medical condition or disease are based upon an “experience practice model” of anecdotal reports from clients, classic massage texts, and massage instructors, unless peer-reviewed evidence is specifically cited. The practice of massage therapy with an
“evidence-based practice model” is in its infancy.
Potential users of massage therapy, or any other alternative and complementary therapy, should understand that while positive anecdotal reports of success with massage therapy in
treating a medical condition may be causal with the therapy, other factors such as the Placebo effect and the Hawthorne Effect may play a role.
