Feeling the freeze in Frozen Shoulder? Perhaps Frozen Shoulder massage can help.

It may be that your swing on the court has become a battle. Your arm has slowly lost its range of motion, and using that limb creates a bothersome ache in your shoulder. The chances are that if these symptoms have not been caused by a direct trauma, you may be feeling the first signs of Frozen Shoulder.

While the term, “Frozen Shoulder”, is casually used, it is not a specific diagnosis. The term is frequently given when there is pain in the shoulder region, combined with a restriction in range of motion in the shoulder joint. If you’ve ever been told you may have Frozen Shoulder, it is important to find the true cause of the “freezing” so the appropriate treatment can be applied. While the symptoms may be similar, the origins of Frozen Shoulder range from neurologic (as in Hemiplegia), rheumatologic (as in certain types of arthritis), idiopathic (with an unknown origin) and most commonly, adhesive capsulitis (a build-up of scar tissue in the shoulder joint capsule).

Inflammation and enthesitis of the tedinous attachments of the four rotator cuff muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis) seem to repeatedly play a role leading up to Frozen Shoulder. The subscapularis muscle in particular seems to have a direct relationship with the development of Frozen Shoulder pain. Also, the cause of any enthesopathy to the rotator cuff tendons should not be overlooked (usually myofascial trigger points in the muscle tissue), and taken into consideration during the development of a Frozen Shoulder treatment plan.

Fortunately, in many cases Frozen Shoulder pain can be treated conservatively with cold/heat therapy, physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, and specialized massage therapy techniques such as Neuromuscular Therapy. Only extreme cases require surgery. Because conservative therapies take time to “unfreeze” Frozen Shoulder, it is tempting to jump into the "quick fix" of surgery. However, this should be the last resort, not the first.

If you feel the pain in your shoulder is increasing, and you find it more difficult to place your arm in various positions, here is a simple test to see if your shoulder is starting the “freezing” process.

First, place the hand of your afflicted shoulder behind you, into the small of your back. Next, slide your hand up and across your back towards your opposite shoulder blade. You should be able to get your fingertips to touch some part of your shoulder blade. If you can’t, you need to call your doctor and get a proper diagnosis. Discuss a Frozen Shoulder treatment plan, and ask if Frozen Shoulder massage is right for your situation. Then take assertive action before your shoulder becomes fully “FROZEN”.
