Homework Stretching
Your Anchor to Prevent Backsliding between Neuromuscular Therapy Sessions
Rowing a boat up a river against a strong current is a difficult task. Once you start swinging your oars fast enough, you can achieve enough headway to make it to your destination upstream. It can be a frustrating and tiring voyage. Should you decide to take a break in the middle of your rowing and rest awhile, it doesn't take long to find yourself drifting back down stream.
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a similar voyage against a strong current. It takes much work by therapist and client to get a body pain free and structurally aligned. In extreme cases, progress is made only little by little. For most people, there is at least a week between NMT sessions. During this break between sessions, it is crucial for the client to regularly perform stretching "homework" given to him or her by the therapist. What these stretches do is to throw out an anchor so that the body does not get swept back down stream and lose ground that was made during the previous NMT session. If the client faithfully performs their daily stretching routines between NMT sessions, the next NMT session will progress from where the last NMT session left off.
However, if the client does not keep up with "homework" stretching, gravity and old bad habits are sure to work their way back into the client’s daily routine and setback some of the gains made by previous neuromuscular therapy sessions. Part of the next NMT session will just have to be spent making up some of the yardage lost between sessions.
Homework stretching should not be considered a major yoga work out. The key to the effectiveness for this type of stretching is short duration, but frequent repetition throughout your day at home and work. Keep what you've gained from your NMT sessions. Your homework stretching is actually your part of neuromuscular therapy self-care.
